Resumo: The theme developed in this work approaches the meaning of roots and continuity in the architecture of postwar period, through the analysis of theory and work developed by three architects: Le Corbusier, Ernest Rogers and Fernando Távora. This study intends to infer on the valuation of memory, physical and human context and materiality as vehicles in the development of an architecture that deals with dichotomies as erudite/spontaneous, local/global and artisan/industrial. This triangulation is developed in two chapters, as a conducting line established between the architects and the respective works through influences and existing affinities between them. The first chapter focus in the analysis of two houses: Ville Savoye (1929) and Maison Errazuriz (1930), demonstrating how the application of one general principle (the "house of man"), it's done in a local and traditional context, dominated by the presence of artisan techniques in the constructive process. A parallelism is established between the "house of man" by Le Corbusier and the "house for everyone" by Ernest Rogers, sharing both the search of a balance between actual and perennial, crucial for the conquest of a sensible architecture to the diversity and specificity of human reality. The second chapter focus on the theory and work developed by Fernando Távora in the 1950's, the Casa sobre o Mar (1952) and the Mercado Municipal da Feira (1954). Le Corbusier's influence is demonstrated in the architectural course of Fernando Távora, present in the search of a simultaneous sense of roots and continuity, patent in the interpretation of memory and context applied to the circumstancial condition of the moment. The conclusion of the work intends to enhance the relevancy and validity of memory, context and materiality in theorical and practical development of contemporary architecture, understood as continuity of a valuable legacy and as expression of the possibilities and necessities of its time, using the "Casa dos Vinte e Quatro (1995-2002) of Fernando Távora as singular example in the interpretation of the ruin as substance and instrument of creation in contemporary architecture.
