Resumo: Background: Childhood trauma is the major risk factor to the development of social disfunctions in adulthood, commonly associated with the development of different psychiatric pathologies. Among these, social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a disease highly prevalent, but with an unclear aetiology. The objective of this study is a literature review, in an attempt to demonstrate specific associations between different kinds of trauma in childhood (emotional, physical, sexual) and the presence of SAD in adulthood. Method: A search was conducted in PubMed of studies in portuguese or english, with no publication date limitations. Results: A high prevalence of history of trauma in childhood and the presence of SAD in adulthood was detected. The results corroborate that trauma is a risk factor to the development of anxiety disorders. However, only emotional trauma consistently demonstrated a significant and specific association with SAD. Conclusions: Through interactions with multiple factors like peer victimization and negative social experiences, emotional trauma in childhood could lead to the appearance of negative cognitions and dysfunctional beliefs, which are fundamental to the development and maintenance of SAD. Thus, emotional trauma could be interpreted as a specific distal risk factor to the development of SAD.
