Extended School Day policies in Brazil (PAJE): a study on the terminology used in research

Resumo: This article presents a definition for the term Extended School Day Policies (PAJE – Brazilian acronym for Políticas de Ampliação da Jornada Escolar) and five terms that are used in the research on this theme, namely, a) Full-time School; b) Extended School Day; c) Integral Education; d) Full-time Education; and e) Full-time Integral Education. The terminology characterization was defined from the listing of 704 theses and dissertations on PAJE, presented between 1992 and 2019. It was concluded that: a) there is a variety of terms, which are not always used consistently in the research reports; b) clarifying the terminology might contribute to more coherent research; and c) the span of the term PAJE allows it to incorporate the variety of themes that have been explored in the research on extending the time destined to educate children and adolescents at school. La caracterización terminológica fue definida a partir de la catalogación de 704 Tesis y Disertaciones sobre PAJE, defendidas en el período de 1992 a 2019. Se concluyó que: a) existe una profusión de términos, que no siempre son empleados de forma consistente en los informes de investigación; b) la claridad terminológica puede contribuir a investigaciones más coherentes; y c) el término PAJE posee una amplitud que le permite abarcar la variedad de temáticas que han sido exploradas en las investigaciones sobre la ampliación del tiempo destinado a la educación de niños y jóvenes en la escuela. Ampliación de la jornada escolar.Este artigo apresenta a definição do termo Políticas de Ampliação da Jornada Escolar (PAJE) e de cinco termos que são utilizados nas pesquisas sobre essa temática: a) Escola de Tempo Integral; b) Jornada Escolar Ampliada; c) Educação Integral; d) Educação de/em Tempo Integral; e e) Educação Integral em Tempo Integral. A caracterização terminológica foi definida a partir da catalogação de 704 teses e dissertações sobre PAJE, defendidas no período de 1992 a 2019. Concluiu-se que: a) há uma profusão de termos, os quais nem sempre são empregados de forma consistente nos relatórios de pesquisa; b) a clareza terminológica pode contribuir para pesquisas mais coerentes; e c) o termo PAJE possui uma amplitude que permite abarcar a variedade de temáticas que têm sido exploradas nas pesquisas sobre a ampliação do tempo destinado à educação de crianças e jovens na escola.
