Plurality of epistemic collections in the Amazon: history, management and challenges of the Curt Nimuendajú Archaeology Lab (UFOPA)

Resumo: Archaeological collections constitute relevant heritage and study sources, essential for understanding the historical and cultural legacy promoted by past and present societies. The management of these collections goes beyond their curatorship, implying also ethical, political, educational and scientific commitments vis-à-vis different communities. Within this scenario, UFOPA’s Curt Nimuendajú Archaeology Lab, situated in Santarém, Pará presents a special configuration due to its location and because it is accessed by different actors, including indigenous and traditional peoples. The lab acts as locus for generational connection and plural knowledge. Based on these specificities, we present the trajectory of its creation and of the constitution of its collections, in addition to the challenges inherent to its management.

La gestión de estos acervos extrapola la curaduría, implicando compromisos éticos, políticos, educativos y científicos junto a las diferentes comunidades. En este panorama, el Laboratorio de Arqueología Curt Nimuendajú de la UFOPA (Santarém, PA) posee una conformación especial debido a su localización y acceso por diferentes actores y pueblos indígenas y tradicionales. El laboratorio actúa como un lugar de conexión generacional y de pluralidad de conocimientos. Basado en estas peculiaridades, presentamos en este artículo sus antecedentes de creación y constitución de las colecciones, además de los desafíos inherentes a su proceso de gestión.Os acervos arqueológicos constituem relevante patrimônio e fonte de estudo, imprescindíveis para compreensão do legado histórico e cultural promovido pelas sociedades pretéritas e presentes. A gestão desses acervos extrapola a curadoria, implicando compromissos éticos, políticos, educacionais e científicos junto às diferentes comunidades. Nesse cenário, o Laboratório de Arqueologia Curt Nimuendajú da UFOPA (Santarém, PA) possui conformação especial devido à sua localização e por ser acessado por diferentes pessoas, incluindo povos indígenas e tradicionais. O laboratório atua como um lugar de conexão geracional e de pluralidade de saberes.
