Stilt Villages are a type of human habitation recorded in the long term. On the American continent, these dwellings were common in the colonial period in predominantly tropical areas. In the Brazilian archaeological record, stand out dwellings on stilts known as estearias in the Baixada Maranhense. The purpose of this article is to examine the recurrence of stilt houses in the ethnohistorical sources of the lowlands of South America, in order to expand the knowledge we already have about the stilt houses of Maranhão. Information on the size of the settlements, the type of wood used, the reason for the construction of villages in the aquatic environment and the daily activities of these peoples were mapped, thus contributing to a better understanding of the distribution of stilt villages in the lowlands of South America.
