Resumo: Cervical cancer is the fourth most frequent neoplasm affecting women around the world, thanks to the implementation of screening through the Papanicolaou (PAP) test. The study aimed to determine the most prevalent cervical cytological abnormality in women who underwent the Pap test at the General Hospital "Isidro Ayora" of Loja during the period January-December 2019, as well as to indicate their age and place of residence, and gynecological-obstetric history according to the type of abnormality presented. This is a descriptive, quantitative, retrospective study. The universe was 3774 PAP tests, of which 335 reported cytological abnormalities. Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance "ASC-US" was the cytologic abnormality that prevailed (60%), most women resided in the urban area of the province of Loja (49. Most women resided in the urban area of the province of Loja (49.6%), their age was 51 years or older (29%), their sexual debut was at 19 years of age or before (79.1%), with a number of pregnancies of 4 or more as well as births (53.1% and 44.2%, respectively), they used contraceptive methods (41.5%), and 77% had had a previous PAP test. Women who were older, residing in urban areas, whose sexual debut was at an early age, multigravid and multiparous, who did not use any contraceptive method and reported having had a previous PAP, were those in whom cervical cytological abnormalities prevailed, predominantly ASC-US lesions, followed by LIEBG in all of them.

El estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la anomalía citológica cervical de mayor prevalencia en mujeres que se realizaron la prueba de Papanicolaou en el Hospital General “Isidro Ayora” de Loja durante el período enero-diciembre del 2019, así como indicar su edad y lugar de residencia, y los antecedentes gineco-obstétricos según el tipo de anomalía presentada. Se trata de un estudio descriptivo, cuantitativo, retrospectivo. El universo fue de 3774 PAP test, de los cuales 335 reportaron anomalías citológicas. Las células escamosas atípicas de significado indeterminado “ASC-US” fue la anomalía citológica que prevaleció (60%), la mayoría de mujeres residían en la zona urbana de la provincia de Loja (49.6%), su edad correspondía a 51 años o más (29%), cuyo inicio de vida sexual fue a los 19 años o previo (79.1%), con un número de gestas de 4 o más al igual que de partos con 53.1% y 44.2% respectivamente, presidían de métodos anticonceptivos (41.5%), y se había realizado un PAP previo el 77%. Las mujeres con edades superiores, que residían en zonas urbanas, cuyo inicio de vida sexual se presentó a una edad temprana, multigrávidas y multíparas, que no utilizaba ningún método anticonceptivo y afirmaron haberse realizado un PAP anteriormente, fueron en quienes prevalecieron  las  anomalías  citológicas  cervicales,  predominando  la  lesión  ASC-US, seguida por LIEBG en todas ellas.O câncer do colo do útero é a quarta neoplasia mais frequente que acomete mulheres em todo o mundo, graças à implantação do rastreamento por meio do exame Papanicolaou (PAP). O objetivo do estudo foi determinar a anomalia citológica cervical mais prevalente em mulheres que realizaram o exame Papanicolau no Hospital Geral "Isidro Ayora" em Loja durante o período de janeiro a dezembro de 2019, bem como indicar sua idade e local de residência . , e a história gineco-obstétrica de acordo com o tipo de anomalia apresentada. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, quantitativo, retrospectivo. O universo foi de 3.774 exames de PAP, dos quais 335 relataram alterações citológicas. Células escamosas atípicas de significado indeterminado "ASC-US" foi a anormalidade citológica que prevaleceu (60%), a maioria das mulheres residia na área urbana da província de Loja (49,6%), sua idade correspondia a 51 anos ou mais (29%), cujo início da vida sexual foi aos 19 anos ou antes (79,1%), com número de gestações igual ou superior a 4 e partos com 53,1% e 44,2% respectivamente, presidiram métodos contraceptivos (41,5 %), e 77% haviam feito PAP anterior.
