The adaptation of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who undergo invasive procedures requires a series of very significant changes, both physical and psychological. Objective: To relate the experiences of a patient with chronic kidney disease based on Callista Roy's model. Method: Descriptive research with a qualitative approach, of a phenomenological exploratory type. The experiences of a patient with chronic kidney disease who receives dialysis treatment were analyzed, chosen according to the following inclusion criteria: adulthood and family member. The collection of the information was carried out through a semi-structured interview based on Callista Roy's model exploring the process of adaptation, physiological function, self-concept and function of the caregiver role that are present in the experiences reported by the same patient. Results: The information obtained shows that the adaptation of a disease involves several social, physiological, psychological and cultural aspects, triggering levels of stress, anxiety and depression by the simple fact that their lifestyle creates a negative impact. Which is why this investigation seeks to improve the quality of life of patients who have a chronic disease and receives lifelong treatment, thus adapting to new changes. Conclusions: There is an ability to adapt and cope in patients who have chronic kidney disease and who receive dialysis treatment, showing stable trends in the use of strategies to improve the quality of life.
