Effects of palliative care for coping at the end of life: a family approach

Introduction: Palliative care at the end of life has as its main objective to provide a good death through the relief of physical, emotional and spiritual suffering. Objective: to determine the effects of palliative care for coping at the end of life. Method: qualitative, descriptive, retrospective research with a phenomenological approach, in a sample of 10 family caregivers of patients who suffered from terminal illnesses with sometime in the palliative phase and who have currently died. The data collection technique was the interview. Results: the results show that the informal caregiver is ready to fulfill his role, he assumes it as a positive experience, but the lack of information, training and recognition of needs was also evident. Conclusions: The activities carried out by the caregiver were effective in coping with the final phase of life of the patient in the palliative phase because, despite the fact that they were empirical, the role was assumed as a positive and satisfactory experience.
