Potentialities of geotourism in the municipality of Palhoça (SC, Brazil)

This article presents an inventory of public waterfalls in the municipality of Palhoça (SC, Brazil). Waterfalls as natural assets allow the development of tourism given their biotic and abiotic potential. They also enable environmental education and recreation. However, the uncontrolled use of these environments, the lack of planning and the expansion of cities increase the release of waste, graffiti and other aspects that degrade these geosites. The objective of this article is to show the results of the inventory carried out in the geosites of the municipality of Palhoça, in the State of Santa Catarina, with emphasis on waterfalls. With regard to the methodological procedures applied, the work was divided into three stages: research planning, exploratory visits and analysis and discussion. The results indicate that the social and economic transformations that the municipality is targeting, have affected the quality of its waterfalls; that the identified physical aspects can be used as environmental education resources; that aesthetic, geoscientific, cultural values, potential use and the hierarchy of heritage, provide an option for the visitor and the possibility of generating employment and income for the community, which allows us to state that environmental diagnoses in these environments should be stimulated by public administrations.
