The potential of birdwatching tourism in the municipality of Goiás (GO, Brazil)

Birdwatching tourism has been growing in Brazil, but it is still incipient in the state of Goiás and restricted to a few regions. This work evaluates and discusses the potential of the municipality of Goiás as a destination for birdwatching tourism. A survey of the number of bird species in the municipality was carried out and the species composition was evaluated, highlighting the ones that may be attractive to birdwatchers. A survey of places with birdwatching potential was also carried out, highlighting the attractive species, description of the basic and specific infrastructure, and proposing measures to improve these structures. A total of 313 species were recorded, eight of them are endemic to the Cerrado, three are threatened, five are migratory and 32 are partially migratory. There were identified eight areas with birdwatching potential. The richness and composition of birds and the presence of favorable places for birdwatching indicate that Goiás has potential for this activity. However, to be successful, careful planning is required, involving public administration, the private sector, and other stakeholders. Encouraging this type of tourism in Goiás may contribute to the ecotourism growth in the municipality and bring socio-economic and environment.
