Resumo: Local communities mobilize to work with tourism in protected areas of the Amazon. This is more and more frequent, with examples in Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, amongst others. Since 2006, is also a reality in the Amanã Sustainable Development Reserve, in the Brazilian State of Amazonas, where experts and researchers work together with local communities of the Amanã Lake, bringing the topic of tourism to discussion, offering support and gathering information to help them develop tourism in their territories. In order to give residents practical experience and autonomy in decision-making, since 2010 experimental trips were undertaken, when tourists started visiting the lake. These trips had different levels of involvement of the residents, used different logistical structures and provided a diversity of experiences for those involved. And so they served to support ideas and concepts onto practical issues, which in turn enable residents to make decisions about a tourism format to be (or not) implemented by the communities. Based on these experiences and the travel reports on these ‘Journeys to Amanã’, several issues about community-based tourism are discussed, emphasizing the views of the visitors and the proposals of the residents on the type of tourism they intend to develop.
