Resumo: | Demosthenes is recognized as one of the great orators of Antiquity and is also recognized for his political work in defense of Athens, especially for its democracy and freedom, assessing with fear the growth of Macedonian power. Although the defense of democracy is a recurring theme in his speeches, Demosthenes is not a theorist of democracy and much of his view on this political regime is linked to an idealization of the Athenian experience prior to the Peloponnesian War. In the construction of the defense of democracy and the ethos of the democrat, elements of the oligarchy and the oligarch are used. The objective of this paper is to analyze the use of the forms of government democracy and oligarchy by Demosthenes and, for that, the focus will be on the construction of the antithesis between these two forms and the use of the oligarchic experiences of 411 and 404BC in this process. |
