Resumo: Strabo’s Geography presents a systematization of the inhabited world at the beginning of the first century of the Roman Empire. The book XVII comprehends the description of the territories of Egypt, Ethiopia and Libya and it is here analyzed with the purpose of displaying how the Amasian geographer characterizes the North African regions and their respective peoples. It is argued that in this discursive construction, Strabo makes explicit a dichotomy such as barbarian versus civilized, through which he establishes not only the distinction between the two groups but operationalizes from within a gradual differentiation. We consider that such a gradation occurs because of their geographical localization which, to the author, was an important factor that determines their way of life.
