The GEPEMAI - Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisa em Educação Matemática nos/dos Anos Iniciais do Ensino Fundamental (Group of Studies and Research in Mathematics Education in/of the Early Years of Elementary School)—is a study group that meets at the School of Education of the University of Campinas – UNICAMP, since 2009, and whose main objective is to contribute to the professional development of the teacher who teaches Mathematics. Among the objects of study of the GEPEMAI is the work and life of Malba Tahan, a pseudonym for Julio Cesar de Mello e Souza, born May 6th, 1895. An engineer, researcher, writer, editor, lecturer, and professor, Mello e Souza published a vast literary oeuvre: approximately 120 books, 75 of which devoted to Mathematics, including O Homem que Calculava (The man who counted) and Didática da Matemática (Didactics of Mathematics). His contribution to Mathematics Education was such that the National Mathematics Day is celebrated on May 6th in homage to the day of his birth. The present text aims to present the work that the GEPEMAI group is developing of disseminating the life, the work and, above all, the educational legacy and contribution of Malba Tahan for Mathematics Education. The group shares the ideas of Malba Tahan insofar as they understand that Mathematics should not be considered difficult and boring; that Mathematics is for everyone and that the educational activity of the teacher must be directed towards making it understandable and admirable.
