A study on the estimation and resolution of mathematical tasks by fifth grade students

Resumo: | Estimative can be considered as a kind of mathematical calculation to be worked on in the early years of elementary school in situations where we understand the relationship between the context and the calculation necessary to solve it with approximate values. Based on this, we seek to investigate the following research problem: What were the notions of estimative of students of the 5th grade of elementary school were understood and applied in situations of calculation? This research aimed to analyze how 5th grade students understand the relationship between the context of the problem and the calculation needed focusing on the use of estimative to solve mathematical tasks. Fifty students from two classrooms of the 5th grade of elementary school of a state school in Bauru, SP, participated in this research. The instruments used were: Questionnaire, which aimed to characterize the participants in terms of age, gender as well as their perception of performance in Mathematics in general and 2) Mathematical tasks, which aimed to investigate the use of estimative by students. The results obtained with these instruments showed that students are unable to use estimative as a more efficient strategy for solving the mathematical tasks, placing more emphasis on calculations whose results are accurate, more specifically, on algorithms. So, we can conclude that, in general, students who participated in this research cannot use the estimative as a more efficient strategy to solve the presented mathematical tasks |

En base a esto, buscamos investigar el siguiente problema de investigación: ¿Cuáles fueron las nociones de estimación de los estudiantes en el quinto año de la escuela primaria que se entendieron y aplicaron en situaciones de cálculo? Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo analizar cómo los estudiantes en el quinto año de la escuela primaria entienden la relación entre el contexto del problema y el cálculo necesario, centrándose en el uso de la estimación para resolver tareas matemáticas. Participaron en esta investigación, 50 estudiantes de dos aulas del quinto año de la escuela primaria en una escuela estatal en la ciudad de Bauru - SP. Los instrumentos utilizados fueron: 1) Cuestionario, que tenía como objetivo caracterizar a los participantes en términos de edad, género, así como su percepción del rendimiento en Matemáticas en general y 2) Tareas matemáticas, cuyo objetivo era investigar el uso de la estimación por estudiantes Los resultados obtenidos con estos instrumentos mostraron que los estudiantes no pueden usar la estimación como una estrategia más eficiente para resolver la tarea matemática, poniendo mayor énfasis en los cálculos cuyos resultados son precisos, más específicamente, algoritmos. Por lo tanto, concluimos que, en general, los estudiantes que participan en esta investigación no pueden usar la estimación como una estrategia más eficiente para resolver las tareas matemáticas presentadas.A estimativa é considerada como um tipo de cálculo matemático a ser trabalhado nos anos iniciais em situações em que compreendemos a relação entre o contexto e o cálculo necessário para resolvê-lo com valores aproximados. Partindo disso, buscamos investigar o seguinte problema de pesquisa: Quais as noções de estimativa de alunos do 5.º ano do Ensino Fundamental foram compreendidas e aplicadas em situações de cálculo? Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo analisar como os alunos do 5.º ano do Ensino Fundamental compreendem a relação entre o contexto do problema e o cálculo necessário focando no uso da estimativa para resolver tarefas matemáticas. Participaram desta pesquisa, 50 alunos de duas salas do 5.º ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola da rede estadual do município de Bauru - SP. Os instrumentos utilizados foram: 1) Questionário, que tinha por finalidade caracterizar os participantes em termos de idade, gênero bem como sua percepção de desempenho em Matemática de forma geral e 2) Tarefas matemáticas, que tinha o objetivo de investigar o uso da estimativa pelos alunos. Os resultados obtidos com esses instrumentos evidenciaram que os alunos não conseguem utilizar a estimativa como uma estratégia mais eficiente para a solução da tarefa matemática, dando maior ênfase a cálculos cujos resultados são exatos, mais especificamente, a algoritmos.
