Geometric constructions using the régua and the compass in the environment paper and pencil: a study in the light of Van Hiele's theory

Resumo: The present research aims to analyze geometric constructions produced by students of the 8th year of elementary school in a municipal public school through an AB straight line segment using ruler and compass, and from them identify if the participants fit the level of analysis through the Van Hiele Theory. As a theoretical contribution, the development of the geometric thought proposed by the Van Hiele, in particular the levels of understanding that support the verification, identification and framing of the geometric knowledge that each individual possesses through a study on geometry was used. In methodological terms this is an exploratory research with a qualitative approach in which 28 students belonging to the 8th grade of Elementary School participated in a municipal public school located in the city of São Vicente Férrer, located in the Zona da Mata Norte of the State of Pernambuco. For data collection, a test involving two questions was used. The first objective was for the students to perform an equilateral triangle with the AB segment and with the aid of the ruler and the compass. The second one approached the students to construct a square with the segment AB. Through the analyzed protocols, it was noticed that the students used the geometric instruments to respond to the applied test. It was verified through the categorizations that the students submitted to the applied test obtained a higher index of correct answers in the first question, in which it contemplated the construction of the equilateral triangle. It is noteworthy that there was no total error of the test, that is, the students who miss the first question, hit the second and so vice versa. Thus, those students who partially fulfilled the test fit the level of comprehension of the analysis using the Van Hiele Theory, at least in the geometric figure constructed correctly in the study. Therefore, it was evidenced that these students of the 8th year of elementary school conceive geometric knowledge that correspond to the level of comprehension of the analysis through Van Hiele Theory.

Nos apoyamos en la teoría del desarrollo del pensamiento geométrico propuesto por los Van Hiele, en especial en los niveles de comprensión, que nos da soporte para verificación, identificación y encuadramiento de los conocimientos geométricos que cada individuo posee mediante un estudio sobre geometría. En términos metodológicos se trata de una investigación exploratoria con enfoque cualitativo cuantitativo. Participaron de esa vivencia y desarrollo 28 alumnos pertenecientes al 8º año de los años finales de la enseñanza fundamental de una escuela pública municipal situada en la ciudad de São Vicente Férrer, ubicada en la Zona de la Mata Norte del Estado de Pernambuco. Para colectas de datos utilizamos una prueba que contempla dos cuestiones. La primera cuestión mostró un segmento AB, y, a partir de éste, objetivó que los alumnos realizaran con el auxilio de la regla y del compás para construcción geométrica referente al triángulo equilátero. La segunda cuestión, abordó la construcción del cuadrado, y, contempló que los alumnos a partir de un segmento, AB, construyes un cuadrado. Por medio de los protocolos analizados, notamos que los alumnos usaron los instrumentos geométricos para responder la prueba aplicada. Verificamos por medio de nuestras categorizaciones que los alumnos sometidos a la prueba aplicada obtuvieron mayor índice de aciertos en la primera cuestión, en el que contempló la construcción del triángulo equilátero. Es importante resaltar que no hubo error total de la prueba, es decir, los alumnos que erran la primera cuestión, aciertan la segunda y así viceversa. De ese modo, esos alumnos que acertar parcialmente a la prueba se encuadran al nivel de comprensión del análisis mediante la teoría de Van Hiele, al menos en la figura geométrica construida correctamente en estudio. Por lo tanto, evidenciamos que esos alumnos del 8º año de la enseñanza fundamental conciben conocimientos geométricos que corresponden al nivel de comprensión del análisis mediante la teoría de Van Hiele.A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar construções geométricas produzidas por alunos do 8º ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola pública municipal por meio de um segmento de reta AB utilizando régua e compasso, e a partir delas identificar se os participantes se adequam ao nível da análise mediante a Teoria de Van Hiele. Como aporte teórico utilizou-se o desenvolvimento do pensamento geométrico proposto pelos Van Hiele, em especial os níveis de compreensões que dá suporte para verificação, identificação e enquadramento dos conhecimentos geométricos que cada indivíduo possui mediante um estudo sobre geometria. Em termos metodológicos se trata de uma pesquisa exploratória com abordagem qualitativa no qual participaram 28 alunos pertencentes ao 8º ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola pública municipal situada na cidade de São Vicente Férrer, localizada na Zona da Mata Norte do Estado de Pernambuco. Para coletas de dados se usou um teste contemplando duas questões. A primeira objetivou que os alunos realizassem com o segmento de reta AB e com o auxílio da régua e do compasso um triângulo equilátero. Já a segunda abordou que os alunos construíssem um quadrado com o segmento AB.  Por meio dos protocolos analisados, notou-se que os alunos usaram os instrumentos geométricos para responder o teste aplicado. Verificou-se por meio das categorizações que os alunos submetidos ao teste aplicado obtiveram maior índice de acertos na primeira questão, no qual contemplou a construção do triângulo equilátero. Vale ressaltar que não houve erro total do teste, isto é, os alunos que erram a primeira questão, acertam a segunda e assim vice e versa. Desse modo, esses alunos que acertaram parcialmente ao teste se enquadram ao nível de compreensão da análise mediante a Teoria de Van Hiele, pelo menos na figura geométrica construída corretamente em estudo.
