Correlation and causation in inquiry-based teaching Biology classes

Resumo: Correlation and causation are important concepts for the understanding of scientific knowledge, however they are commonly mistaken. We developed and applied a teaching sequence (TS) to investigate how high school students relate different variables in data analysis and to evaluate how a TS that discusses correlation and causation helps in the construction of evidence-based explanations. The investigative TS developed addressed the intestinal microbiota and, during its application, we found out that students usually infer causation through data that demonstrate correlations, often using prior knowledge to justify such inferences. We also consider that as the TS was applied remotely the interaction between peers, fundamental in the investigative approach, was not effective, explaining students' difficulty in recognizing and overcoming their mistakes.

Desarrollamos y aplicamos una secuencia didáctica (SD) para investigar cómo los estudiantes de secundaria relacionan variables en el análisis de datos y evaluar cómo una SD que conversa correlación y causalidad ayuda en la construcción de explicaciones basadas en evidencia. La SD desarrollada abordó la microbiota intestinal y, durante su aplicación, comprobamos que los estudiantes suelen inferir causalidad a través de datos que demuestran correlaciones, muchas veces utilizando conocimientos previos para justificar tales inferencias. También consideramos que dado que se aplicó a distancia, la interacción entre pares no fue efectiva, lo que explica la dificultad de los estudiantes para reconocer y superar sus errores.Correlação e causalidade são conceitos importantes para o entendimento de conhecimentos científicos, porém são comumente confundidos. Desenvolvemos e aplicamos uma sequência didática (SD) para investigar como estudantes do Ensino Médio relacionam variáveis na análise de dados e avaliar como uma SD que discute  correlação e causalidade ajuda na construção de explicações baseadas em evidências. A SD investigativa abordou a microbiota intestinal e, durante sua aplicação, verificamos que os estudantes costumam inferir causalidade através de dados que demonstram correlações, muitas vezes  utilizando  conhecimentos prévios para justificar tais inferências. Também ponderamos que, por a SD ter sido aplicada remotamente, a interação entre  pares,  fundamental na abordagem investigativa,  não foi efetiva, explicando a dificuldade de os estudantes  reconhecerem e superarem os erros cometidos.
