The third domain of life: analysis of Archaea teaching in high schools of Distrito Federal, Brazil

Resumo: The similarities between Archaea and Bacteria led to the joining of these two domains of prokaryotes in the same taxonomic category (Monera) for years. The objective of this study was to analyze the teaching of Archaea in high school in three public schools in Distrito Federal, Brazil, from the perspective of teachers and students and analysis of didactic books. Questionnaires were applied to teachers and students to identify aspects that guide the teaching of this topic. Results showed that Archaea teaching occurs simplistically. Students do not recognize the fundamental characteristics of these microorganisms and associate Archaea with Bacteria. One textbook analyzed still adopts the classification system of organisms in five kingdoms and presents limited information on this topic.

El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la enseñanza de Archaea en escuelas públicas secundárias del Distrito Federal, Brasil, desde la perspectiva de docentes, estudiantes y el análisis de libros didácticos. Se aplicaron cuestionarios a docentes y estudiantes para identificar los aspectos que orientan la enseñanza de este tema. Los resultados mostraron que la enseñanza de las Archaeas ocurre de forma simplificada. Los estudiantes no reconocen las características básicas de estos microorganismos y asocian las Archaeas con Bacteria. Un trabajo didáctico analizado aún adopta el sistema de clasificación de organismos en cinco reinos y presenta información limitada del tema.Historicamente, as semelhanças entre Archaea e Bacteria levaram ao agrupamento desses dois domínios de procariotos na mesma categoria taxonômica (Reino Monera). O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o ensino sobre Archaea no nível médio em três escolas públicas do Distrito Federal, a partir da perspectiva de professores, estudantes e da análise de livros didáticos. Foram aplicados questionários a docentes e discentes para identificar os aspectos que norteiam o ensino desse tema. Os resultados mostraram que o ensino sobre Archaea ocorre de forma reducionista. Estudantes não reconhecem características básicas desses microrganismos e não discriminam corretamente membros alocados nesses dois domínios.
