Evidence of acupuncture in treatment of low back pain

Resumo: <p><b>INTRODUCTION:</b> Low back pain is a very prevalent condition in the elderly. It causes significant morbidity and cost to society. Considering the search for effective, safe and affordable treatments, especially in the elderly, who are more susceptible to medications side effects, acupuncture has been widely used as a primary or complementary treatment option for low back pain.<br> <b>OBJECTIVE:</b> This review examined the currently available evidence supporting the use of acupuncture to treat low back pain.<br> <b>METHODS:</b> The following databases were searched: PubMed and Lilacs with keywords: "low back pain" and "acupuncture".<br> <b>RESULTS:</b> Some studies suggest better efficacy of acupuncture compared to treatment with anti-inflammatory. Others studies showed similar superiority between real acupuncture and sham acupuncture compared to conventional drug therapy, while others studies suggest superior benefit of real acupuncture compared to sham. However, systematic reviews have highlighted the lack of well-designed studies to assess properly the true role of acupuncture in low back pain.<br> <b>CONCLUSION:</b> The evidence of acupuncture for low back pain was demonstrate and it is better than the conventional treatment. However the sham and real acupuncture had haven the some evidence in this review.</p>
