E-mail: foliveira@uenf.br In the year of 2001, the State Inspection Service (S.I.E.) identified 41 rural properties at different municipalities from North Rio de Janeiro State region, Brazil, as being potential foci of fascioliasis. Among these, 23 belonged to the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes. During the period from March 2002 to December 2004 those properties were tracked to confirm the identification of positive cattle through fecal examination as well as to verify the presence of larval stages in snails of the genus Lymnaea recovered from the properties. The results were similar to data presented by the Inspection State Service (S.I.E.), because they indicated the presence of positive animals in 17 (74%) of the farms, being 8 (47%) from Santa Maria, 5 (29%) from Morro do Coco and 4 (24%) from Santo Eduardo. The outcomes of fecal examinations matched evidence found by S.I.E. during anatomo-pathological analyses, what suggests that positive areas are enzootic for fascioliasis. Detection of positive cattle in addition to the presence of L. columella in three properties point to a possible existence of autochthones foci, but more studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis because the mollusks were not parasitized.
