E-mail: domingues.cleide@yahoo.com.br Coccidiosis is an important cause of enteritis and death in birds of all species, but the genus Isospora is considered the most relevant coccidia parasite of Passeriformes. Chose, level and frequency of drug administration are essential for the control of coccidiosis, which are specific for each species of avian hosts. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of the drugs sulphaquinoxaline, Sulfamethazine and Diclazuril in green-winged saltators Saltator similis kept in quarantine at the Center of Wild Animals in Seropédica, RJ. As results, treatment with sulphaquinoxaline administered in two doses was the most effective and the mean values of oocysts shedding decreased considerably after all types of treatment. The Diclazuril caused morphological and morphometric changes in the four species of Isospora parasites of Saltator similis. Finally, it is suggested to use sulphaquinoxaline in two doses with a four-day interval between them not exceeding twelve days of treatment, while the Diclazuril should be administered for periods exceeding two consecutive days. |
