Resumo: Following recent studies on “field theory” and “new institutionalism”in journalism studies (Benson 2004, 2006), the starting premise ofthis article is that the press maintains linkages with three externalfields: states, markets and civic society. Linkages are shaped bystructural relations as well as by newsmaking practices. Structuralfactors such as ownership, financing, and legislation determinethe connections of news organizations with states, business, andcivic actors. The processes of news production and consumptioninvolving newsrooms, sources, and audiences also affect theintensity of the relations between the press and external fields.
