UNDERSTANDING SCHOOL VIOLENCE: A RAPID REVIEW ON CHARACTERISTICS, ASSOCIATED FACTORS, AND INTERVENTIONS

Resumo: Educational institutions must create welcoming and secure environments to foster student learning and development. However, safety in schools has been compromised by a series of incidents involving school violence, ranging from peer victimization and bullying to armed attacks (Polanin et al., 2020, Silva et al., 2020). This study conducts a rapid review of systematic reviews on school violence conducted both in Brazil and internationally, aiming to comprehend the characteristics of school violence, its associated factors, armed attacks in schools, and potential prevention and intervention measures to address school violence. A rapid review approach was employed, following the PRISMA protocol (Page et al., 2020). The focus was on systematic reviews related to school violence, identified through title searches across eleven databases. A total of 1,738 publications were retrieved. After removing duplicates, screening references, and evaluating the quality of the full texts, 127 studies were included in the analysis. The resulting categories were as follows: characteristics of school violence (15% of studies), factors associated with school violence (45.7%), interventions to combat school violence (33.8%), and armed attacks on schools (5.5%). The findings underscore the complexity of school violence and the variability in prevalence rates, while also emphasizing the need for further research on school violence within the Brazilian context contributing to the development and evaluation of inclusive and culturally appropriate interventions.

Sin embargo, la seguridad en las escuelas se ha visto comprometida por una serie de incidentes de violencia escolar, que van desde la victimización entre iguales y el acoso hasta ataques armados (Polanin et al., 2020; Silva et al., 2020). Este estudio realiza una revisión rápida de revisiones sistemáticas sobre violencia escolar realizadas en Brasil y en el extranjero, con el objetivo de comprender las características de la violencia escolar, sus factores asociados, los ataques armados en las escuelas y posibles medidas de prevención e intervención frente a dicha violencia. Se adoptó un enfoque de revisión rápida, siguiendo el protocolo PRISMA (Page et al., 2020), con énfasis en revisiones sistemáticas sobre violencia escolar, que se rastrearon mediante la búsqueda de títulos en once bases de datos. Se recuperaron 1.738 publicaciones y, después de excluir duplicados, seleccionar referencias y evaluar la calidad de los textos completos localizados, se mantuvieron en el análisis 127 estudios. Las categorías resultantes del análisis fueron: características de la violencia escolar (15% de los estudios), factores asociados a la violencia escolar (45,7%), intervenciones para abordar la violencia escolar (33,8%) y ataques armados en escuelas (5,5%). Los resultados resaltaron la complejidad de la violencia escolar y la heterogeneidad de las tasas de prevalencia de la violencia escolar, además de resaltar la necesidad de más investigaciones sobre la violencia escolar en el contexto brasileño, contribuyendo al desarrollo y la evaluación de intervenciones más inclusivas y culturalmente apropiadas.As instituições de ensino devem ser ambientes acolhedores e seguros para promover o aprendizado e o desenvolvimento dos estudantes. Foi adotada uma abordagem de revisão rápida, seguindo o protocolo PRISMA (Page et al., 2020), com ênfase em revisões sistemáticas sobre violência escolar, as quais foram rastreadas por meio da busca de títulos em onze bases de dados. Foram recuperadas 1738 publicações e, após a exclusão das duplicatas, triagem das referências e avaliação da qualidade dos textos completos localizados, 127 estudos foram mantidos na análise. As categorias resultantes da análise foram: características da violência escolar (15% dos estudos), fatores associados à violência escolar (45,7%), intervenções diante da violência escolar (33,8%) e ataques armados às escolas (5,5%).
