Quality of life of elderly in cities in the health macro-regions of Paraíba

Resumo: The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of life of elderly residents in cities located in different health macro-regions of Paraiba, Brazil. Quantitative instruments, including the WHOQOL-BREF, ABEP Criterion (Brazilian Association of Research Companies), and a socioeconomic-demographic variables form were employed. A semi-structured interview was conducted for qualitative research. A total of 34 elderly participants with an average age of 65 to 94 years took part in the study. The qualitative data analysis resulted in three categories: Concepts of quality of life, Self-assessment of quality of life, and Factors that influence the quality of life. Both the quantitative and qualitative assessments indicated a positive quality of life among the elderly. The key factors positively influencing their quality of life included: financial stability, strong familial and social relationships, and the adoption of healthy habits. Conversely, the main aspects that had a negative influence were financial instability, the COVID-19 pandemic, and social isolation. This study proposes the utilization of both quantitative and qualitative approaches for a comprehensive understanding of the quality of life of the elderly.

Foram utilizados os instrumentos quantitativos: WHOQOL-BREF; Critério ABEP; e formulário de variáveis socioeconômico-demográficas. Foi utilizada entrevista semiestruturada para a pesquisa qualitativa. Participaram 34 idosos com média etária de 65,94 anos. A análise dos dados qualitativos resultou em três categorias: Conceitos da qualidade de vida; Autoavaliação da qualidade de vida; Aspectos que influenciam a qualidade de vida. A qualidade de vida de idosos foi positiva nas avaliações quantitativa e qualitativa. Os principais aspectos que influenciaram positivamente: boa condição financeira; bom relacionamento com família e amigos; e adoção de hábitos saudáveis. Os principais aspectos que influenciaram negativamente foram: instabilidade financeira; pandemia de COVID-19; e isolamento social.
