Resumo: Objective: To understand the meaning of living deprived of freedom. Methods: This is a      qualitative, phenomenological study      that was conducted in a prison institution in the countryside      of Minas Gerais, with 18 individuals deprived of freedom. A phenomenological interview guided by a semi-structured script was conducted, followed by analysis carried out based on Viktor Frankl’s existential phenomenology. Results: Two categories emerged. In the first, interviewees highlighted the negative meanings of living deprived of freedom, such as a sense of loss, apathy, and anguish due to incarceration. In the second, the positive meanings were elucidated as individuals found better living conditions in prison compared to their experiences outside, especially regarding access to food and the cessation, although compulsory, of alcohol and drug use, which contributed to improved health. Conclusion: Incarceration, encompassing both negative and positive meanings, represents a complex locus, demanding sensitive approaches that integrate the search for meaning, care, and rehabilitation.

Sociedade de Estudos e Pesquisas Qualitativos - SE&PQ2024-02-10info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://editora.sepq.org.br/rpq/article/view/615Qualitative Research Journal ; Vol. 12 No. 29 (2024): Janeiro/Abril: Publicação Contínua; 78-94Revista Pesquisa Qualitativa; v. 12 n. 29 (2024): Janeiro/Abril: Publicação Contínua; 78-942525-82221809-025710.33361/RPQ.v.12.n.29reponame:Revista Pesquisa Qualitativa (Online)instname:Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos e Pesquisa Qualitativos (SE&PQ)instacron:SE&PQporhttps://editora.sepq.org.br/rpq/article/view/615/401Copyright (c) 2024 Revista Pesquisa Qualitativahttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessCaçador, Beatriz SantanaSilva, Laylla Veridiana Castória Batista, Gian do CarmoGarcia, Marina Alves Resende, Matheus Augusto Soares deNogueira, Amanda de Paula Souza, Thuany Caroline Silva eLopes, Fabiana Nascimento Belo, Maisa AparecidaAndrade, João Vitor2024-02-10T18:01:37Zoai:editora.sepq.org.br:article/615Revistahttps://editora.sepq.org.br/index.php/rpq/indexONGhttps://editora.sepq.org.br/index.php/rpq/oai||revista.rpq@gmail.com2525-82221809-0257opendoar:2024-02-10T18:01:37Revista Pesquisa Qualitativa (Online) - Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos e Pesquisa Qualitativos (SE&PQ)false
