Resumo: O objetivo é apresentar e analisar algumas características de alunos cotianos no Oitocentos e as influências do cotidiano local na vida escolar. Entre as fontes estão livros de matrícula, relatórios de Instrução Pública, registros paroquiais e dados demográficos. Inicialmente discorre sobre a Vila de Cotia e a sociedade caipira. A seguir, analisa a composição social das turmas. Por fim detém-se no estudo das relações étnico-raciais, comprovando a hipótese de que nesse contexto existia uma maior proximidade entre senhores e escravos que em lugares mais ricos e que a vida fora da escola se refletia dentro dela.Palavras-chave: Alunos; Século XIX; Cotia; São Paulo; Escolas Públicas. Students from public schools in the cultural context caipira: social composition and the childhood colors schooling in Cotia (1870-1885)Abstract: The aim of this study is to analyze some of the characteristics of students from the municipality of Cotia, state of São Paulo, Brazil, in the 19th century, looking into the influence of everyday life on schools. The source materials used include book enrollment, public reports, parish records, and demographic data. This study initially discusses general aspects of life in Cotia and in rural communities of that time. We also analyze the social composition of students’ groups, addressing ethnic and racial relationships, and proving the hypothesis of a closer relationship between slave owners and slaves in such environment, as compared with more affluent regions, and of the effect of life outside school on the teaching environment.Keywords: Students; XIX Century; Cotia; São Paulo; Public Schools.
