Qualitative analysis of screening data of women with body dissatisfaction: behavioral perspective

Resumo: Complaints of body image dissatisfaction lead many women to seek Psychology services. In the screening procedure, its possible to obtain and clarify information, which makes it easier for the clinician to understand this demand type. As a product of a screening for a group-therapy, this study aims to present a qualitative analysis of the women’s reports about body dissatisfaction, from the analytical-behavioral perspective. The screening took place by filling out a form, applying the Body Shape Questionnaire and a semistructured interview. Four women were selected, having resorted to a Content Analysis. The following categories were formed: participant’s characterization; experiences in relation to physical form; establishment of the body-identity relationship; body coping repertoire experienced as aversive and body modification attempts. Clarifying body dissatisfaction problems through screening is essential to understand how the demand is constituted in order to plan and execute actions aimed at a more efficient and focal therapeutic process.

No procedimento de triagem, é possível obter e clarificar informações, o que facilita ao clínico compreender esse tipo de demanda. Como produto de uma triagem para uma grupoterapia, este estudo objetiva apresentar uma análise qualitativa dos relatos de mulheres com insatisfação corporal, na perspectiva analítica-comportamental. A triagem ocorreu mediante o preenchimento de um formulário, aplicação do Body Shape Questionnaire e entrevista semiestruturada. Foram selecionadas quatro mulheres, tendo-se recorrido a uma Análise de Conteúdo. Constituíram as seguintes categorias: caracterização das participantes; experiências na relação com a forma física; estabelecimento da relação corpo-identidade; repertório de enfrentamento do corpo vivenciado como aversivo e tentativas de modificação corporal.
