Resumo: The chemical scarification can be used in seeds to optimize germination and uniform seedling produc- tion, facilitating the management of culture. In this context, was made an experiment with object to test chemical scarification of seeds of Surinam cherry (Eugenia uniflora). The treatments consisted of control (T) (without chemi- cal treatment) and chemical scarification (EQ) seeds (6 % NaCl + 3 mg HCl L–1 + 20 g NaOH L–1) for 40 minutes. The number of seeds germinated was evaluated throughout the experiment. The percentage of emergency, mean emergency time, rate and coefficient of emergency, and the seedling growth parameters (height, stem diameter, leaf diameter, leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weight of shoot and root) were analyzed at the end of the test. The experimental design was completely randomized with three replications of 21 seeds per treatment to test emergency and three replicates of seven plants per treatment for the parameters of plant growth. Scarification has reduced significantly the mean emergence time, increased the rate and coefficient of germination and also increased growth parameters in seedling surinam cherry.
