Resumo: Land disposal of the wastes with high organic content can be an efficient alternative to reduce its pollutant potential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the decomposition rate of the urban waste and sewage sludge applied in two soils and their effects. The microbial activity was evaluated for the respirometric method after addition of the di- fferent residues and concentrations in two soils (Hapludult and Paleudult). The residues were applied four times in two years at the different rates of the urban waste, sewage sludge, and mineral fertilization. An additional treatment with 2-fold residue concentration over the higher rate of the residues, enriched with metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni and Pb) was also included. Results exhibited an increase of the microbial activity in the soils after application of the urban waste, sewage sludge, mineral treatment, varying with the different doses. The residues’ enrichment with heavy metals did not affect the microbial activity. In the highest application rate, the mineralization of residues were 14.5 % for the urban waste and 28.7 % for the sewage sludge, with small differences between soils.
