DIFFERENCES IN NEUTRALIZING ANTIBODY LEVELS TO BOVINE HERPESVIRUSES TYPES 1 (BHV-1) AND 5 (BHV-5)

Resumo: | In order to compare the neutralizing antibody response after natural bovine herpesvirus infections, 508 cattle sere were tested by serum neutralization (SN) against bovine herpesvirus type I (BHV-1) and bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BHV-5). Two hundred. and forty-nine (49%) sere were negative for antibodies to both viruses, whereas 290 (57%) were positive for BHV-I and 288 (57%) were positive for BHV-5 antibodies. However, 41 (8%) of the BHV-1-positive sera were negative for BHV-5 antibodies. On the other hand, 39 (7.7%) of the BHV-5-positive sere were negative for BHV-1 antibodies. These resulta indicate that, if SN is to be used to evaluate the serological status of herda to thcse two types of viruses, testa must be performed against both BHV-1 and BHV-5, since they do not induce fully crossreactive neutralizing antibodics. |

Com o objetivo de comparar os anticorpos neutralizantes induzidos por infecções por herpesvírus bovinos, 508 soros bovinos foram testados pela prova de soroneutralização (SN) frente' aos Herpesvfrus Bovinos tipo 1 (511V-1) e tipo , 5 (BHV-5). Duzentos e quarenta e nove (49%) foram negativos para ambos os vírus, enquanto que 290 (57%) foram positivos para BHV-I e 288 (57%) foram positivos para BHV-5. No entanto, 41 (8%) dos soros positivos para BHV-1 foram negativos para anticorpos anti- BHV-5. Por outro lado, 39 (7,7%) dos soros positivos para BHV-5, foram negativos para BHV-1. Estes resultados indicam que, se a SN for utilizada com a finalidade de avaliar o status sorológico de infecções por BHV-1 e BHV- 5, os testes devem ser realizados frente aos dois tipos de vírus, uma vez que eles não induzem reatividade cruzada em todos os animais.
