Resumo: Tannery residues and coal mining refuse are important polluting sources in Brazil, mainlyin the southern Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states. In order to study the tannery and coalmining soil decomposition evaluated by microbial activity was carried out an experiment in controlledconditions using and Acrisol under grassland. Eight treatments were applied contend tannery sludge, leather shavings and coal refuse. Tannery sludge was efficient to increase the pH and nitrogen supplyto system. Mineral chromium (Cr (III)) applied with tannery sludge affected the microbial activityevaluated by C-CO2 release. The tannery sludge can be used to soil acidity amelioration caused bycoal refuse with high reduced sulfur content (pyrite). The leather shavings can be disposed in soil;however, it is necessary a lime application, and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium amendment forcrop production. Coal refuse has a soil acidification potential and low decomposition rate.
