Under field conditions, at the Experimental Station of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in Eldoradodo Sul (southem Brazil) from August 1980 to July 1983, was evaluated the effect of the season of the year (winter, spring, summerand autumn), growth stage (vegetative and flowering) and cutting heigth (5 and 10 cm) on the forage yield of alfalfa (Medicago salivaL.), Paspalum guenoarum Arech. and weeds, as well as crude protein concentrations and yield of the total mixturecomponents(grass+ alfalfa +.weeds) There was a significam (P<0.05) seasonal effect on dry matter (DM) yield and crude protein (CP) content forall componente, with the highest values being obtained during spring and summer. Cutting forage at flowering stage, at 5 cm stubbleheight for alfalfa and 10 cm for P. guenoarum, resulted in the highest DM yields and provided a better forage seasonal trends. TheDM yields of weeds were improved by the utilization at the vegetative stage. In all seasons, clipping at vegetative stage at 10cmstubble height provided the heighest CP concentrations. The highest CP yields wereobtained during spring with clipping at floweringstage.
