Resumo: Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is an important forage to supply necessities of pasture in winter in all the south region of Brazil. The germination test for this species can delay up to 28 days and the tetrazolium test may allows in three days the evaluation. The objective of this study was to verify the security of tetrazolium test to evaluate germination ryegrass seeds and to make possible and to spread out this test as routine in the seed testing laboratories of analysis of seeds. Data from germination and tetrazolium test were obtained from samples of 929 seeds lots of 1994 up to 2004 in the fiches of analysis in the Seed Testing Laboratory of LASO/FEPAGRO. The tests were carried through in accordance with the Rules for Testing Seeds. The results shown that over 1055 analyses in ryegrass seeds , 922 were germination tested and 133, tetrazolium tested. The samples in which the two tests were carried out, were compared by the test t. A difference of 4% between the two tests was not significant. It was concluded that the use of the tetrazolium test is possible, with efficiency and rapidity, as a routine test to evaluate the quality of ryegrass seeds.

O azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) é uma espécie forrageira importante para suprir as necessidades de alimentação dos rebanhos no inverno em toda a região sul do Brasil. A análise da qualidade das sementes desta espécie pode demorar até 28 dias, pelo método do teste de germinação e o teste de tetrazólio permite que, em três dias, a avaliação seja realizada. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a segurança do teste de tetrazólio para avaliar a germinação das sementes de azevém, possibilitar e difundir o emprego deste teste, como rotina, nos laboratórios de análise de sementes. Foram obtidos dados de análise de germinação e tetrazólio em amostras de 929 lotes de sementes de 1994, até 2004 nas fichas de análise no Laboratório de Análise de Sementes - LASO/FEPAGRO. Os testes foram realizados de acordo com as Regras para Analise de Sementes. Os resultados obtidos nos dois testes mostraram que de 1055 análises em sementes de azevém, 922 foram pelo teste de germinação e 133, pelo teste de tetrazólio. As amostras nas quais os dois testes foram realizados, tiveram seu resultado comparado através do teste t. Verificou-se, após a comparação, que a diferença de 4% entre os resultados obtidos nos dois testes não foi significativa. Concluiu-se que é possível a utilização do teste de tetrazólio, com eficiência e rapidez, como um teste de rotina para avaliar a germinação das sementes de azevém.
