Resumo:  This study was carried out at the Agronomic Experimental Station of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, located in Eldorado do Sul, RS, southem Brazil (30°06' 5, 51°39' W) fromiuly 1989 to February 1990. The following soil treatments were tested: Methyl Bromide (50cm 3/m2),Fosetyl-Al (25g/101 water/m 2), Benomyl (10 g/10Iwater/m 2), and a control. Also mulching treatments were tested and consisted of: rice hull, straw, rice hull + straw, and a control. The number of seedlings emerged and the average plant height at 90, 120 and 150 days after sowing were evaluated. The experimental design was a split-plot in a randomized block with four replications, with the soil treatments as the main plots and mulching as the sub-plots. Results showed that Fosetyl- Al had the best performance among the tested products. Methyl Bromide provided good emergence but caused leaf chlorosis, rosette symptoms and reduced growth. With Benomyl there was low emergence, however did not reduce growth. All mulching treatments favored seedling emergence and did not affect average plant height.
