Root length and architecture of paddy rice genotypes in nutrient solution and their relationship with nutrient uptake and dry matter yield

Resumo: The obtaining of higher grain yield in paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) is necessary to increase economic gain and to reduce enviromental impact, due to lower area demand. Yield increases can be obtained with the development of more efficient genotypes in nutrient uptake, that can be related to root morphology, architecture and distribution in soil. A greenhouse experiment was conducted, in nutrient solution, to compare genotypes IRGA 417 and IRGA 419 (modern), EEA 406 (traditional), Avaxi (hybrid, RiceTec) and Bluebelle (american) in relation to root lenght and architecture, nutrient uptake (P and K) and dry matter yield, in growth stage V 8 to V 10.IRGA 417 developed lenghter roots, while IRGA 419 and Bluebelle had shorter roots. Avaxi developed more superficial roots, while EEA 406 and Bluebelle developed deeper roots. Avaxi, with root lenght similar to IRGA 417, had greater P and K uptake and greater shoot and total dry matter yield. There was relationship between root lenght and nutrient uptake and dry matter yield, with advantage to plants with lenghter roots.

A obtenção de maior rendimento de grãos na cultura do arroz irrigado por inundação (Oryza sativa L.) é necessária, para que a cultura seja viável economicamente e cause menor impacto ambiental, pela menor demanda de área de cultivo. Uma das formas de aumentar o rendimento do arroz é o desenvolvimento de genótipos mais eficientes na absorção de nutrientes, o que pode estar relacionado com a morfologia, arquitetura e distribuição do sistema radicular no solo. Conduziu-se um experimento em solução nutritiva, em casa-de-vegetação, comparando os genótipos IRGA 417 e IRGA 419 (modernos), EEA 406 (tradicional), Avaxi (híbrido, RiceTec) e Bluebelle (americano) quanto ao comprimento e arquitetura das raízes, absorção de nutrientes (P e K) e produção de matéria seca, no estádio V 8 a V 10. A variedade IRGA 417 desenvolveu raízes mais compridas, enquanto IRGA 419 e Bluebelle apresentaram menor comprimento. O híbrido Avaxi desenvolveu raízes de distribuição mais superficial, enquanto EEA 406 e Bluebelle apresentaram raízes mais profundas. O híbrido Avaxi, com raízes de comprimento semelhante à IRGA 417, apresentou maior absorção de P e K e maior produção de matéria seca da parte aérea e total. O comprimento das raízes relacionou-se com a absorção de P e K e a produção de matéria seca, com vantagem para plantas com raízes mais compridas.Departamento de Diagnóstico e Pesquisa Agropecuária.
