Viability of stored seeds from immature fruits of jaborandi (Pilocarpus pennatifolius Lem. - RUTACEAE)

Jaborandi grows naturally in Brazil from São Paulo to Rio Grande do Sul and contains small amounts of pilocarpina alkaloid. It presents intermittent flowering and fruiting along the year, making difficult the collection of seeds in the period of fruits dehiscence. To evaluate the seeds viability of immature fruits, germination tests at harvest time, after fruits dehiscence in room conditions and during 330 days storage in dry chamber conditions were carryed out. Seeds from immature fruits with 17,4% of moisture content, presented 85% of germination, and after fruits dehiscence 76%, with moisture content reduction to 9,5%. Initial viability was not significantly affected during nine moths of storage, but at 11th months there was a germination reduction to 40%, showing a trend of less then one year of seeds longevity conservation.
