Resumo: The Pindo palm (Butia odorata) is a palm tree that occurs in South Brazil, more specifically in Rio Grande do Sul and also in Uruguay. In Rio Grande do Sul there are extensive natural areas that have great genetic variability, where productive and adapted to the various ecological conditions phenotypes can be selected. The objective of this work was to characterize the chemical and physical parameters of the fruits produced by Pindo palm trees located in four areas of natural distribution. The fruits were harvested in the 2008 and 2009, from February to March, with bunches with less than 50 % of fallen fruits and sampled 50 fruits per bunch. The populations did not differ on their chemical characteristics. The population of Santa Vitória do Palmar was characterized by larger fruits, while the population of Tapes, Barra do Ribeiro and Arambaré did not differ. Barra do Ribeiro population presented higher fruit pulp yield. In general, it is observed that the population of Santa Vitória do Palmar presents, on average, larger fruit than the other populations. On the other hand, the population of Barra do Ribeiro stands out for smaller fruits, but of greater pulp’s yield, with advantage in the industrial processing.
