Resumo: The study of mortality of Geophagus brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) was made at the Águas Belas reservoir (Viamão, RS, Brasil). The samples were taken fortnightly from September / 1995 to August/1996. The animais were captured using a beach seine and a circular fishing net, both with 5 mm mesh size. The total mortality (Z) and the natural mortality (M) rates were the same, since there is no fishing over the population in the reservoir. The Z rate was 54% and the survival one was 46%. Longevity was 10, 34 (females) and 9,37 (males) years. The female length curve parameters were: Linf. = 18.54; K = 0.29 and to = 1.15.

The female length curve parameters were: Linf. = 18.54; K = 0.29 and to = 1.15.O estudo da mortalidade de Geophagus brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) no açude Águas Belas, município de Viamão, RS foi baseado em coletas quinzenais realizadas entre setembro/ 1995 e agosto/1996, com o emprego de rede de arrasto de praia (picaré) e de tarrafa, ambas com malhagem de 0,5 cm entre nós adjacentes. Considerou-se a mortalidade total (Z) como sendo de mesmo valor que a mortalidade natural (M), já que não há nenhum esforço de pesca sobre a espécie, obtendo-se Z = 54 %. A sobrevivência (S) foi estimada em 46 %. A longevidade foi de 10,34 anos para as fêmeas e de 9,37 anos para os machos.
