Resumo: The central object of the present study is to do an economic appraisal of two type of ecological tomato production: the farm level and greenhouse. The analysis allows infer that either of those systems of ecological production are economically feasible, because they have a high return over the initial investment. It is possible to recover the investment in last of a year. Beyond it, the cultivation in greenhouse can be extended to couple with other types of horticulture products using the same facilities.

O objetivo central do presente estudo foi de fazer uma avaliação econômica de duas técnicas de produção do tomate ecológico: a campo e em estufa. Os resultados da análise permitem inferir que ambas as formas de produção ecológica deste produto são economicamente viáveis, pois têm um alto retorno sobre os investimentos iniciais feitos de forma que em menos de meio ano o produtor pode recuperá-los. Embora estas técnicas de cultivo avaliadas ainda sejam incipientes, seus resultados indicam que podem ser importantes alternativas para a pequena propriedade, pois são altamente rentáveis e exigem poucos investimentos para sua adoção. Além disso, o cultivo em estufa pode ser estendido para outros tipos de produtos aproveitando os mesmos investimentos.Departamento de Diagnóstico e Pesquisa Agropecuária.
