Use of daminozide in reducing the size of potted plants of Siphocampylus betulifolius

Resumo: | Siphocampylus betulifolius is a Campanulaceae perennial herb endemic to southern Brazil, with rare occur- rence. Due to the continuous flowering it is important genetic resource for indoor decoration. The aim of this study was to test the efficiency of daminozide in plant height reduction, as a way to adapt it as a container plant. Seedlings were established in pots (1.5 L), three plants each, and received five foliar applications with 0, 2500 and 4500 mg/L of dami- nozide each. During 19 weeks vegetative growth and flowering were evaluated. There was a 41 % and 64 % reduction in plant height, with 2500 and 4500 mg L–1, respectively, as well as reduction in the leaves and shoots number. The flower buds number did not differ, but the open flowers number was lower in the presence of daminozide, independent of concentration. The use of plant regulator daminozide was effective in reducing plant height of S. betulifolius. |

Siphocampylus betulifolius é uma Campanulaceae perene, herbácea, endêmica do sul do Brasil, com ocorrência rara. É importante recurso genético para a ornamentação de interiores por apresentar florescimento contínuo. O objetivo do trabalho foi testar a eficiência de daminozide na redução do porte das plantas, de forma a adequá-las para uso como planta de vaso. Mudas produzidas por sementes foram estabelecidas em vasos (1,5 L), três plantas cada, e receberam cinco aplicações foliares de 0,2500 e 4500 ppm de daminozide. Durante 19 semanas de acompanhamento, avaliaram-se aspectos de desenvolvimento vegetativo e de florescimento. Houve redução do porte das plantas de 41 % e 64 %, com 2500 e 4500 ppm, respectivamente, assim como a redução do número de folhas e de brotações. O número de botões florais não diferiu, mas o número de flores abertas foi inferior em pre- sença de daminozide, independente da concentração.
