Resumo: | Objective: to evaluate depression and the quality of life of elderly people living in a long-term institution. Methods: cross-sectional study with a quantitative, exploratory and descriptive approach. The quality of life scale and the geriatric depression scale were used in 19 elderly people. The data received descriptive and inferential statistical treatment (chi-square, Fisher's exact to identify Spearman's association and correlation). The p-value ≤ 0.05 was adopted as significant. Results: the majority did not present depressive symptoms (57.9%), but a low quality of life score (78.9%). When the depressive symptoms were crossed with the quality of life facets, the facet of low general health presented statistical significance (p <0.05). When the means of the two scales were crossed, a negative correlation (- 0.46; p <0.05) was obtained between depressive symptoms and quality of life. Conclusion: the higher the quality of life of institutionalized elderly people, the lower the depressive symptoms. |

Métodos: estudo transversal de abordagem quantitativa, exploratório e descritivo. Utilizou-se a escala de qualidade de vida e a escala de depressão geriátrica em 19 idosos. Os dados receberam tratamento estatístico descritivo e inferencial (qui-quadrado, exato de fisher para identificar associação e correlação de Spearman). Adotou-se como significante p-valor ≤ 0,05. Resultados: a maioria não apresentou sintomas depressivos (57,9%), porém baixo escore de qualidade de vida (78,9%). Quando cruzado os sintomas depressivos com as facetas de qualidade de vida, a faceta baixo estado geral de saúde apresentou significância estatística (p < 0,05). Quando cruzadas as médias das duas escalas obteve-se correlação negativa (- 0,46; p < 0,05) entre sintomas depressivos e qualidade de vida.
