Resumo: Objective: to measure the nursing workload in an Adult Intensive Care Unit through the Nursing Activites Score, to identify the profile of the patients, as well as to size the number of nursing professionals. Method: a descriptive-exploratory, cross-sectional study of a quantitative approach developed in an Adult ICU in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. The score was applied once a day for a period of one month after statistical analysis. Results: The mean score found was 62.14 points, equivalent to an average of 14.91 hours of care per patient in the 24 hours. It was verified that the nursing work process was performed by four nurses and 24 nursing technicians. Conclusion: It was identified a high nursing workload, and the staffing is inadequate as established by the Federal Nursing Council, but meets the requirements of the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency.

O escore foi aplicado uma vez ao dia durante o período de um mês, após realizou-se análise estatística. Resultados: A pontuação média encontrada foi de 62,14 pontos, equivalente a uma média de 14,91 horas de assistência por paciente nas 24 horas. Constatou-se que o processo de trabalho da enfermagem era realizado por quatro enfermeiras e 24 técnicos de enfermagem.
