Resumo: Objective: to verify the association between functional capacity and the demands of institutionalized elderly, according to the theory of Virginia Henderson. Methodology: descriptive, cross-sectional study developed with 203 elderly people from a Long-Term Care Facility for the Elderly. The Katz Index and an instrument based on Henderson were used, with socioeconomic, clinical data, and physical examination. Pearson's chi-square test was performed. Results: elderly people who presented demands on the need to move and maintain a good posture, dress, and undress, communicate and learn, most of them were grade III dependent. For the needs to Maintain temperature and Occupy, the degree of dependence that most prevailed was II. Conclusions: based on the identification of the demands for needs, functional capacity, and its impact on their satisfaction, the nurse must seek strategies that help the institutionalized elderly to recover their health, enabling them to acquire their autonomy and independence as soon as possible.
