Resumo: Objective: to evaluate nurses' know-how in relation to good practices with peripheral vascular catheters. Method: Descriptive, quantitative study, carried out in wards of the clinic service of a University Hospital in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Nineteen nurses and nursing residents participated. Data were collected from March to May 2021, and analyzed using simple descriptive statistics. Results: the importance of prior communication and clarification to the patient before the procedure was identified. When choosing the device, consider the peculiarities as prescribed therapy and venous capital. 68,4% (n = 13) consider the smaller the catheter caliber, the lower the complications. Among the antiseptics used, 70% alcohol stands out. In covers and fixations, sterile gauze with adhesive tape or microporous tape predominates in 42,1%. When assessing the catheter insertion site, 88,9% of nurses perform it daily. As for the signs and symptoms evaluated in the ostium, hyperemia (84,2%), heat (84.2%), edema (84,2%) and pain (78,9%) predominate. About training / qualifications of the nursing team, 76,5% do not perform this activity. Conclusion: the study demonstrated that the majority of nursing professionals follow the good practices recommended in the national and international scientific literature. The data produced show the importance of training / qualifications of the nursing team regarding the insertion and handling of these devices, in order to make the technique safer for the patient, preventing complications.
