Resumo: Sepsis is defined as a systemic inflammatory response syndrome, which occurs when the body's response is not efficient to fight infection and may evolve to severe sepsis when associated with organ dysfunction or septic shock. The study aims to investigate in the literature, the average cost with hospitalizations of patients with sepsis or septic shock in Brazil. It is an integrative review of the literature performed in the databases: LILACS, MEDLINE, CINAHAL and COCHRANE. The DeCs used were: Diagnóstico, Sepse and Análise de Custos. Also the MeSHs were: Diagnosis, Sepsis, Cost and Cost Analysis, using the Boolean operator AND. 10 articles were included to compose the sample of this review.  The studies corroborate that sepsis represents a large economic burden.  It is estimated that about R$ 3,692.421.00 are spent in Brazil per year with sepsis patients, highlighting that the cost varies according to the length of stay and that early diagnosis can minimize the length of stay of patients and consequently, costs.  It is concluded that sepsis is a frequent problem, of high lethality and that it generates a high cost to the public and private coffers, and that there is lack of studies in the area.
