Resumo: Objective: To analyze nursing understandings about the safety of elderly patients hospitalized in the emergency unit in times of COVID-19. Methods: This is a mixed study, with a quantitative and qualitative approach, of the participant type. 21 nurses and 29 nursing technicians who work in the respiratory unit of a public hospital in the Federal District participated in this research. Results: Of the professionals investigated, most were female and reported moderate difficulty in assisting elderly people with COVID-19. Half of these mentioned moderate difficulty following patient safety protocols. Conclusion: From this study, it was possible to identify that the COVID-19 pandemic transformed health services and highlighted problems already experienced for many years.

Discussion: it is observed that care for the elderly person hospitalized in times of COVID-19 requires the expansion of training, resources and support for nursing professionals who work in the emergency. Conclusion: from this study, it was possible to identify that the COVID-19 pandemic transformed health services and highlighted problems already experienced for many years.Objetivo: analisar as compreensões da enfermagem sobre segurança do paciente idoso hospitalizado na unidade de emergência em tempos de COVID-19. Métodos: trata-se de um estudo misto, de abordagem quantitativa e qualitativa, do tipo participante. Participaram dessa pesquisa 21 enfermeiros e 29 técnicos de enfermagem que atuam no bloco respiratório de um hospital público do Distrito Federal. Resultados: dos profissionais investigados, a maioria era do sexo feminino e referiu dificuldade moderada em assistir idosos com COVID-19. Metade destes mencionou dificuldade moderada em seguir os protocolos de segurança do paciente. Discussão: observa-se que os cuidados a pessoa idosa hospitalizada em tempos de COVID-19 solicitam a ampliação de formações, recursos e de suporte aos profissionais da enfermagem que atuam na emergência.
