HEALTH EDUCATION IN PRENATAL CARE: PERSPECTIVE OF PUERPERAL WOMEN AND HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

Introduction: Health education in prenatal care can favor a positive experience of women during pregnancy, delivery and birth, and in the puerperium, as well as ensure maternal and newborn health. Objective: To know the perspective of puerperal women, doctors and nurses of primary care about health education in prenatal care. Methodology: Qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study with thirty participants, sixteen puerperal women who had prenatal care in primary health care and fourteen professionals, including doctors and nurses, conducted between January 2021 and May 2022. Data were processed through thematic content analysis. Results: It was identified that health education in prenatal care occurs during consultations, mainly by general practitioners. The focus of attention of these professionals is on clinical and obstetric evaluation, and the guidelines are based on the "alarm signs" of labor and/or complications, and the choice of mode of delivery. Nurses often perform the first prenatal consultation, with an emphasis on disease detection. The partner's prenatal care has low adherence. Final Considerations: Prenatal health education is insufficient to meet the knowledge needs of women. The participation of nurses in prenatal consultations is recommended, which can be shared with physicians; creation of groups of pregnant women; with strategies for their adherence in the groups and of the partners in the consultations.
