Resumo: Introduction: tooth loss is considered one of the main problems to oral health due to its high prevalence and because it expresses a failure of previous preventive and/or curative measures. Objective: to evaluate the prevalence of tooth loss, expectations regarding replacement and associated factors in adults and the elderly. Methods: a cross-sectional observational study was carried out with 303 randomly selected participants, followed by a clinical examination and an interview with a structured questionnaire, which included sociodemographic and oral health aspects. To assess the strength of the association between the independent variables and the dimensions, the odds ratio (OR) was calculated and the confidence interval (CI) used was 95%. To verify the associations between the variables, the Chi-Square Test was used. Results: they demonstrated a prevalence of 84.5% for tooth loss, caries was identified as the biggest cause (68.7%) and molars represented the most extracted tooth (90.2%). The majority reported the expectation of replacing lost teeth with dental implants (43.8%). Conclusion: high prevalence of tooth loss in adults and the elderly, caries was the main cause of tooth loss and molars represented the most extracted tooth. The factors associated with tooth loss were: female gender, age group over 50 years old, up to 10 years of education, being in classes C or D and have used dental services in the last 12 months.
