Resumo: Objective: To identify the conception of climacterium and which plants and phytomedicines are most used as natural therapeutics by women experiencing climacterium. Method: Qualitative descriptive and exploratory study, held at a Primary Health Care Unit of a municipality in Bahia. It had as informants 17 women aged between 40 and 63 years and as inclusion criterion to be assiduously attending the unit; in turn, the exclusion criteria were: to have cognitive deficit that affected information collection; hearing impairment that prevented or hindered verbal communication. The collection of empirical data took place by means of semi-structured interviews, containing objective and subjective questions. The ethical principles of Resolution Nº 466/2012 of the National Health Council were respected, and then this work was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (REC) of the Southwest Bahia State University (UESB, as per its Portuguese acronym), according to opinion number 2.440.117. The data were treated and analyzed using the Bardin’s Thematic Content Analysis technique. Results and Discussion: It was pointed out that women confuse climacterium with menopause by considering it as a disease and that most participants resorted to the use of medicinal plants and phytomedicines as natural therapeutics. Conclusion: The study shows a medicalized conception about the climacteric period by the participants; however, they know how to identify the specific changes of the phase and use both natural tactics to deal with this period and seek help from conventional medicine.
