Resumo: Objective: To analyze the understanding of puerperal women about the process of inducing labor experienced by them. Methods: descriptive-exploratory research, conducted with 13 mothers who were induced by a reference maternity located in Petrolina / Pernambuco, through a semi-structured interview, carried out between the months of October and November 2018. The data were analyzed using the Thematic Content Analysis. Results: an induction experience was perceived by some women as a beneficial practice, which helps in labor, causing or provoking the triggering of situations caused and in which a woman does not present spontaneous contractions. However, for another part of the participants, a labor induction was a totally unknown technique and configured as an extremely painful and suffered experience, compensated, however, by the pain of having the child in their arms. Conclusion: note the need and importance of the guidance offered on the induction process for pregnant women, not only during hospitalization at the time of delivery, but mainly, during the prenatal period, so that they feel more prepared, exercise their autonomy and be satisfied with their births, based on a true humanized practice.
